Part 1 - #100 to #81
100. Camila Cabello – “Crying In The Club”
We start off the list with the Sia-esque debut solo single from the breakout star of Fifth Harmony.
99. J.Cole – “Neighbors”
Shout out goes to my brothers for introducing me to J. Cole (and this interesting track in particular) on our late night drives.
98. Lorde – “The Louvre”
“The Louvre” sees Lorde perfectly capturing the feelings that come from being completely obsessed with someone and all the things you’d give up just to be with them.
97. Vance Joy – “Lay It On Me”
Vance Joy made his return this year one of his best songs in a long time; a great, slow-building track with a big trumpeting chorus.
96. Charli XCX – “Boys”
This track features the most star-studded music video of the year, featuring cameos from many male musicians doing rather feminine things.
95. DJ Khaled (feat. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper & Lil Wayne) – “I’m The One”
Another star-studded collaboration, except this time the artists are on the actual track. This is Khaled’s first real worldwide hit after is resurgence to fame through his iconic Snapchats.
94. Taylor Swift – “Gorgeous”
Out of all the pre-album promotional singles Taylor released for this album, “Gorgeous” is the closest she comes back to 1989’s familiar textures of bright, shiny synths.
93. Adele – “Water Under The Bridge”
It’s already been two whole years since 25 has been released, and yet I’m still talking about her. That’s staying power.
92. Cardi B – “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)”
One of the biggest underdogs to come up in the rap game this year. Admittedly this song took me the longest time to “get”, but the cadence she uses in the chorus sounds fierce.
91. Ed Sheeran – “Eraser”
The opening cut on Divide is a classic Sheeran-style rap track outlining his trials and obstacles during his climb to fame.
90. The Weeknd (feat. Daft Punk) – “I Feel It Coming”
I think it’s great that the Weeknd is continuing to pull influence from 80’s music to make his own. While its really different from what he used to make, it really suits him.
89. Ball Park Music – “Exactly How You Are”
It’s nice to have the old, upbeat Ball Park Music I love back. I was worried their “Nihilist Party Anthem” from last year would lead them to making more downbeat music, but thankfully not.
88. Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan – “There For You”
Call me out of touch, but I was not expecting Martin Garrix to make a big come back after 2013’s massive dance hit “Animals”. His singles from this year prove that he can do so much more.
87. Katy Perry – “Roulette”
While Witness has been one of the more disappointing pop records of this year, it’s not without it’s brilliant moments. The “Final Countdown”-ish synth horns at the start of this track is one of those moments.
86. Bleachers – “Hate That You Know Me”
Fun fact: If you listen closely to the chorus, you can hear Jack singing along with Julia Michaels and Carly Rae Jepsen on backing vocals.
85. Selena Gomez & Marshmello – “Wolves”
“Wolves” surrounds Selena’s subtle vocals with a dark, brooding atmosphere before collapsing into its EDM chorus.
84. Kaleo – “Way Down We Go”
I thought the guy who sang this song was Hozier at first. Turns out singing slow, dark, blues rock with a rough voice is pretty common.
83. Lorde – “Supercut”
“In my head I do everything right”; I totally get it, Lorde. I totally get it.
82. Lady Gaga – “The Cure”
Gaga is usually seen as more of an innovator of pop music than a trend-hopper. Despite this, her take on the tropical-tinged pop is still put together rather well.
81. Childish Gambino – “Redbone”
(aka What Redbone would sound like if it was my 81st favourite song of the year.)
